{"id":26,"date":"2017-12-10T01:37:44","date_gmt":"2017-12-10T01:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fencingarchive.com\/?p=26"},"modified":"2019-07-05T18:14:42","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T18:14:42","slug":"the-great-epee-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fencingarchive.com\/index.php\/2017\/12\/10\/the-great-epee-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Epee Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As reported in \u201cThe Riposte\u201d (precursor to \u201cAmerican Fencing\u201d), there was a debate in 1940 on whether or not electric epee should return to the \u201c1-Touch\u201dformat or remain the new \u201cBest 3 of 5\u201d format. With World War II preoccupying Europe and both the Olympic and FIE competitions being cancelled, America was in a position to go its own way and experiment with alternate formats without conflicting with the FIE.<\/p>\n<p>Arguments for \u201c1-Touch\u201d epee was it simulated the duel closer and the electric epee was still relatively new and considered easily prone to failure. With the price for three electric epees (The amount being necessary to make it through a tournament) being upwards of $30 it was thought cost was driving away new epee fencers. Counter arguments ranged from victory in a \u201c1-Touch\u201d bout being more luck than skill and the need to train with the international standard in mind in anticipation of the war ending and international competition returning.<\/p>\n<p>While the \u201c1-Touch\u201d format remained in local competitions, championships were fenced with the \u201cBest of 3 of 5.\u201d That was until 1942 when a shortage of Epee blades and electric components forced the return of the \u201c1-Touch\u201d Format for all championships, the first time since 1931.
